What’s it all about

Bairns can enjoy Edinburgh’s Hogmanay with our specifically tailored children’s events. Come and explore The National Museum of Scotland as we bring the party indoors animating spaces with art, words and sounds from across Scotland.

Sprogmanay finds its home in the National Museum of Scotland on Chambers Street. Running across the three days, 30 Dec - 1 Jan, the museum will be a hub for family-friendly celebrations featuring arts and crafts, live music, a specially designed map trail, storytelling and a special Lantern Procession, in advance of our Torchlight Procession, with the Up Helly Aa Vikings who have come all the way from the Shetland Isles!

*Except Tales of a Grandson, pre-booking is now sold out however a small number of tickets will be available on the day from our Hub in Hawthorden Court.  

What to Expect

Each day will bring a host of activity! 

FRIDAY 30 DEC - NOON - 4PM

  • Hogmanay arts and crafts activities
  • Explore the museum using our Hogmanay trail
  • Make mini lanterns in our arts and crafts hub then show them off during one of our mini processions around the museum
  • Live music performances from Sprog Rock
  • Design-and-build a Dazzle Ship with Edinburgh Art Festival
  • Edinburgh International Science Festival buskers will entertain us throughout the afternoon
  • Red Bridge presents Tales of a Grandson in association with Imaginate Festival at 12.30pm and 3pm. Pre-booking for this event is now sold out however a small number of tickets will be available on the day from our Sprogmanay Hub in Hawthornden Court.  

SATURDAY 31 DEC - NOON - 4PM 

  • Scottish storytelling in the museum
  • Musicians from the Scottish Chamber Orchestra perform on the main stage
  • Family fun at the National Museum of Scotland’s annual Hogmanay Family Ceilidh
  • Design-and-build a Dazzle Ship with Edinburgh Art Festival
  • Hogmanay arts and crafts activities
  • Explore the museum using our Hogmanay trail

SUNDAY 1 JAN - NOON - 4PM 

  • The Scottish Chamber Orchestra brings in the New Year with lively pop-up performances and vibrant  musical activities for all the family 
  • Hogmanay arts and crafts activities 
  • Explore the museum using our Hogmanay trail
  • Scottish storytelling in the museum Live music performances from Sprog Rock and Eilidh Steel & Mark Neal
  • Design-and-build a Dazzle Ship with Edinburgh Art Festival
